The front door slammed shut, silencing Lizzy's eighteenth birthday celebration. She sat at the head of the table usually reserved for her stepfather, Ben. Her mother and stepbrother, Steven, sat on either side of Lizzy. She closed her eyes to make a wish before blowing out the candles.

"Where the hell is everybody?"

Her eyelids flew open; everyone's gazes darted down the narrow hall to the front entrance. Ben leaned against the doorjamb, a twisted grin on his face. The smell of whiskey wafted into the kitchen and soured the sweet scent of the icing. The beautifully decorated cake slowly became a puddle of melted wax.

His presence quickly changed Lizzy's happiness to fear. She inhaled deeply and braced herself for what she knew would come next. Mentally, she counted Ben's footsteps as he made his way to the kitchen. Every few steps, he bounced off the hall walls and stopped to regain his balance.

Even his son, who could do no wrong in Ben's eyes, gripped the tabletop so hard his knuckles turned white. Lizzy's mother slowly rose to her feet and stood in front of them. She took a deep breath before she lifted her chin and pushed back a stray lock of her flaming red hair.

"You're just in time, Ben. We were getting ready to have some birthday cake." Delia's chipper invitation belied the tremble of fear that ran through her words.

"Birthday cake?" He loomed over the table. Spit sprayed all over the cake as he spoke. His eyes filled with anger and loathing as his glare pierced through each one of them in turn. "You mean to tell me, while I'm out slaving at the mill to put food on this table, you're throwing my hard-earned money away on such nonsense as a birthday cake?"

Delia's hand covered the locket around her neck; she turned it over in her hand. "Lizzy, Steven, go up to your rooms, please."

Their chairs scraped against the wood floor. Lizzy and Steven stood and slowly inched away from the table toward the doorway.

"I don't think so!" Ben's fist slammed on the tabletop, silverware bounced across the shiny wood finish. He rounded the table and stuck his hand in the center of the cake.

Candles toppled over in the icing. He took a handful and plopped it down in front of each of them. "You all want cake? Eat it! I'll be damned if you'll throw it out after spending a small fortune of MY money on it."

"Ben!" Delia motioned for Lizzy and Steven to hurry from the room. "Please...it's Lizzy's birthday."

"Lizzy's birthday." He mimicked, his lips twisting into an angry snarl. "I don't give a **** if it's the Queen of England's birthday." His icing-covered fist slid off the side of the table, and he crashed to the floor where he stayed, passed out cold.

"Quick, go!" Delia pleaded with Lizzy and her stepbrother and ran to Ben's aid.

Lizzy grabbed her mother's shirt sleeve. "I don't want to leave you alone with him."

"For God's sake, Lizzy, go! I'll be fine."

Reluctantly, she did as her mother asked and ran to the stairway that led up to her room. Steven hadn't wasted a second in following their mother's orders, the bang of his door reverberating throughout the old farmhouse. Lizzy stumbled up the stairs, her vision blurred. Her heart hammered in her chest as she fumbled with the doorknob and flung open the door. She slammed it shut and slid the bolt. With her back against the door, she gave in to the torrent of tears and slid down until her bottom hit the cool hardwood floor.

A loud bang stopped her crying, and she pressed her ear to the door. Her mother grunted under her stepfather's weight, pausing after each step to catch her breath. How many times had she heard this same sound since her mother had married Ben and they'd come to live in Acadia? She knew what would happen next. Delia would put him to bed, and all the while, he'd mumble incoherently. The sun would rise in the morning, and she'd get him up for work, making him coffee and a lunch befitting a king. Not one word would be spoken about the previous night, the kitchen magically cleaned up and back to its natural state as if nothing had ever happened.

Lizzy sighed wearily upon hearing her mother's footsteps pad back down the stairs. Under any other circumstance, she'd offer to help clean up the mess, but anger and fear kept her exactly where she sat. Slomo stretched out luxuriously from atop her bed and meowed in her direction before she jumped down and stepped onto her lap. She ran her hand through the silky mass of orange fur, and the cat turned over, offering her belly.

Lizzy hiccupped and shook her head. "Happy Birthday to me." Her fingers slid across the soft underbelly of her most trusted confidant.

1- The Color Purple

The BOOK
2- The title of the book The Color Purple is a very important symbol. Celie goes through life having a hard time noticing the beautiful aspects and appreciating them. She had a difficult life and was abused as an adolescent. The color purple is continually equated with suffering and pain. Sofia's swollen, beaten face is described as the color of "eggplant." Purple is the color of Celie's private parts: the site of her sexual violation. However, later Shug points out to her that you have to enjoy life. When they were in a field of purple flowers, Shug tells Celie to look at the flowers and embrace their beauty. You must look at all the good and acknowledge them because God placed them all on earth. After learning this, Celie has a better respect for life and everything it has to offer.

3- The Pink Panther

4- Despite its use in the titles of most of the films of the series, the "Pink Panther" is not the Clouseau character, but a large and valuable pink diamond which is first shown in the first film in the series.[1] The phrase reappears in the title of the fourth film, The Return of the Pink Panther, in which the theft of the diamond is again the center of the plot; that film also marked the return of Sellers to the role after a gap of ten years, which may have contributed to some confusion between the character and the diamond.

6- Burgess quote: "The title of the book 'Clockwork Orange' comes from an old London expression, which I first heard from a very old Cockney in 1945: 'He's as queer as a clockwork orange' (queer meaning mad...). 10- Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe is a 1987 novel by Fannie Flagg. It was adapted into the film Fried Green Tomatoes, which was released in 1991. The "Whistle Stop Cafe" is loosely based on the Irondale Cafe in Irondale, Alabama, a suburb near Flagg's birthplace. It is still in operation and, like the fictional cafe, is known for its fried green tomatoes

11- Yellow Submarine

12- Yellow Submarine was written by Paul one night in the summer of 1966 while lying in bed and thinking of making a children's song. It was almost immediately decided that Ringo should sing the lead, since he was thought of by fans as the most lovable group member. To that end, Paul purposefully kept the words and the melody simple. A deceptively simple song, it tells the story of a group of sailors and their idyllic life in the ship of the title

13- The Red Shoe Diaries

The BOOK
14- The tested episodes always open with a quick montage of a newspapers personals section ad under "Red Shoes" seeking women to mail in their personal diaries with stories of love, passion and/or betrayal. The presenter and host Jake Winters is then shown walking on desolate train tracks with his dog Stella. He begins reading a letter from his post office box out loud that begins with "Dear Red Shoes..." He first took out the ad after the suicide of his fiancée, and his subsequent confrontation of the man with whom she was having an affair, a construction worker & shoe salesman who sold her a pair of red high heels, inspiring both the ad and the show's title. He placed the ad in the newspaper in an effort to understand why it happened and learn his fiancée's reasons for killing herself through the stories of women in similar situations.

A Christmas Poem for the Ladies

Merry Christmas Ladies!

If I were ol' Santa, you know what I'd do

I'd dump silly gifts that are given to you

And deliver some things just inside your front door

Things you have lost, but treasured before.

I'd give you back all your maidenly vigor,

and to go along with it, a neat tiny figure.

Then restore the old color that once graced your hair

Before rinses and bleaches took residence there.

I'd bring back the shape with which you were gifted

So things now suspended need not be uplifted.

I'd draw in your tummy and smooth down your back

Till you'd be a dream in those tight fitting slacks.

I'd remove all your wrinkles and leave only one chin

So you wouldn't spend hours rubbing grease on your skin.

You'd never have flashes or queer dizzy spells,

And you wouldn't hear noises like ringing of bells.

No sore aching feet and no corns on your toes,

No searching for spectacles when they're right on your nose.

Not a shot would you take in your arm, hip or fanny,

From a doctor who thinks you're a nervous old granny.

You'd never have a headache, so no pills would you take.

And no heating pad needed since your muscles won't ache.

Yes, if I were Santa, you'd never look stupid,

You'd be a cute little chick with the romance of a cupid.

I'd give a lift to your heart when those wolves start to whistle,

And the joys of your heart would be light as a thistle.

But alas! I'm not Santa. I'm simply just me,

The matronest of matrons you ever did see.

I wish I could tell you all the symptons I've got,

But I'm due at my doctor's for an estrogen shot

Even though we've grown older, this wish is sincere,

Bikers' Night Before Christmas

T'was the night before Christmas, and not until Spring, would an engine be running, not even a Wing.

The bikes were all sleeping, they're covered and warm, batteries are tended, nylon covers their form.

My Bros were all nestled snug in their beds, while visions of new chrome danced in their heads.

And I in my doo-rag, bike jacket and boots, out shoveling snow and dreaming of scoots.

Then from the horizon there came such a clatter, my shovel I dropped. What could be the matter?

Away up the hill, I drudged through the snow, looked up at the sky. Where'd all that noise go?

A throb from the heavens like straight pipes so hearty, gave Summers' good thoughts, a loud biker's party.

When, what to my wondering eyes would appear, but a neat '02 Retro, red trailer in rear.

With a little old rider, so lively and quick, I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.

More rapid than crotches his Retro came on, and he whistled, and shouted, and sang out this song;

"Now, Harley! Now, Big Dog! On Honda and Beamer!

Now Vulcan, Now Indian, on Vict'ry and Trumpet!

To the top of the porch, to the top of the wall!

Now RIDE away! RIDE away! RIDE away all!"

As small bikes that from the semis do fly, when they meet with the air blast, mount to the sky.

So, up to the house-top that Ol' Retro it flew, with a trailer of goodies, and ole' St. Nick too.

And then in a twinkling, I heard on the roof, the rumble and thunder of pipes that gave proof.

I ran to the house, boots thumping around, and in came St. Nick all bearded and round.

Dressed all in black leather, from do-rag to boot, his chaps were all tarnished with road grime and soot.

A T-bag of goodies he'd flung on his back, and he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.

His shades-how they twinkled! his do-rag how scary!

With chains intertwined, through skulls that were cherry!

His droll little mouth had done many a row, but the beard of his chin was as white as the snow.

The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth, the smoke had a strange smell, it gave him relief!

He had a broad face and a fat beer belly, that shook when he laughed like a bowl full of jelly.

He was tattooed and plump, a right jolly old rider, so I offered a cold Bud. I though what could be righter?

A wink of his eye as he downed the cold beer, gave me to know, I had nothing to fear.

He spoke not a word, but went straight to my ride, and fixed it with Chrome, Horsepower and Pride!

And giving the peace sign with bikers' good cheer, took off for his Retro which was rumbling quite near.

He sprang on the saddle, his gloves on the bars, a wheely he threw, then off towards the stars!

I heard him exclaim, as my chest swelled with pride...

"Happy Christmas to all, and to all a Good Ride!"

Thirteen Observations from Yesterday

I went out yesterday...

1- I'd much rather be at home.

2- Traffic is crazy and it's only going to get worse in the next few weeks.

3- My baby - 16 yr old is an amazing young lady. She only wanted a tattoo for Christmas. So, after discussing it for a year or so, I agreed . She designed her own and it's quite beautiful. It's a Swallow(bird) just under her collarbone. She wanted that specific bird because a Swallow signifies; Loyalty to friends, Always returns home, and Only one mate for life.

4- My body is certainly not what it once was. Just that short time out and I'm still paying for it today

5- Christmas is soooo close.. yikes!

6- I have a very short Christmas list this year.

7- As I ordered my grand daughters present to be delivered to her place, it made me sad. I don't think she'll make it down my way before Christmas, but hopefully in between then and New Years' Eve.

8- There are so many things out there that remind me I won't have my Mom & Dad at Christmas.

This is 3rd year without my Mom (she passed on Boxing Day) and the 4th without my Dad. I miss them.

9- Postage is outrageous. I won't tell you how much it cost to send out all of my Christmas cards, a few books and a Few CD's. I'm afraid if I say it out loud I'll have a stroke.

10- The malls are a nightmare, reminding me how much I detest Christmas shopping. Actually I detest shopping..period, but especially this time of year.

11- I have zero tolerance for rude people.

12- I'm so glad I decided on what I wanted for Christmas. My two girls (16 & 17 yrs old) are cooking Christmas dinner. It' s only for five people and they are both turning into pretty amazing cooks.

13- I treasure so many online friendships I have, and count my blessing for those I know and those I have yet to meet.

Thirteen Christmas Traditions

As foreign factories provide us with monstrous piles of cheaply produced goods -- merchandise that has been produced at the expense of our countries labor. This year will be different. This year we will give the gift of genuine concern for others locally. There is no longer an excuse that nothing can be found that is produced by our hands. Yes there is!

EVERYONE gets their hair cut. How about gift certificates from your local hair salon or barber?

Purchase a new gym membership at a local gym, or renew a family members' existing one.

Small, locally owned detail shops and car washes would love to see you a gift certificate or a book of them.

Are you one of those extravagant givers who think nothing of forking out the big bucks on a Chinese made flat-screen? Maybe that grateful gift receiver would like his driveway sealed, or lawn mowed for the summer or driveway plowed all winter, or games at a local golf course.

There are a kazillion owner-run restaurants--all offering gift certificates. If your intended isn't the fancy restaurant sort, what about a half dozen breakfasts at the local diner. Remember, this is about supporting a local business owner whose financial lives are on the line to keep their doors open.

How many people couldn't use an oil change for their car, truck or motorcycle, done at a shop run by a local working guy?

I can't think of a Mom out there who wouldn't LOVE the services of a local cleaning lady for a day.

Your computer needs a tune-up. I KNOW you can find some young computer geek who is struggling to get his repair business up and running.

Maybe you're looking for something more personal. Local crafts people spin their own wool and knit them into scarves. They make jewelry, and pottery, and beautiful wooden boxes. How about buying from a small family owned jewelry store where you can support local artisan and have a one of a kind piece made right here in your hometown by local designers.

Plan your holiday outings at local, owner operated restaurants and leave your server a nice tip. How about tickets to see a play or ballet in your hometown theater?

Musicians need love too, so find a venue showcasing local bands.

When you buy a five dollar string of Christmas lights, about fifty cents stays in the community. If you have those kinds of bucks to burn, leave the mailman, trash guy or babysitter a nice BIG tip.

There will be oodles of eBook devises under the tree this year. Why not load it up with books by local authors, even authors living in your own part of the world? I know they would appreciate the gesture, myself included *wink, wink.

Excerpt from Book One - Chapter One

In the blink of an eye, a fully loaded log truck veered into their path. Experience enabled Shane to manoeuvre his motorcycle around the truck before it jackknifed, his vision blocked by the load of logs swaying precariously on the back. Above the screech of the truck’s brakes locking, a blood-curdling scream sliced through the very core of his being.

Shane dropped his bike, lunged forward, and rounded the back of the truck in the same instant his wife and her bike parted ways. He heard the resounding crunch of metal as her Ironhead bounced off the cab and tumbled down the side of the mountain. Kelly flew through the haze of dirt and debris, landed with a sickening crunch; her body slid down the road.

“Kelly!” Shane ran wildly after his wife. Sliding on his knees, he caught her crumpled body and held her head on his lap. Her glazed eyes held his for the briefest of moments before rolling back, her lids closing for the last time.

“Somebody help! You f***ing bastard! You rotten, mother f***ing, son of a bitch!”

Shane’s venomous outburst stopped the dazed driver who burst from the passenger side of the truck.

The man turned and stumbled back to call for help. A spasm of coughing stopped Shane’s tirade. The acrid stench of diesel fuel assaulted his senses. Sobbing, Shane brushed his wife’s matted curls from her bruised and bloodied face. Hearing the familiar rumble of a motorcycle, Shane looked up to see a man wearing a wide-brimmed leather hat come out from behind the truck. The stranger crouched down beside his bike and tied something to his swing arm.

“Hey! Over here!” Shane waved his hand in the air.

Shane rubbed his burning eyes with the heel of his hand, only to see the man was no longer there.

Teetering on the brink of hysteria, Shane covered Kelly’s mouth with his own. He blew long and hard in a futile attempt to fill her lungs with his breath. Gasping, he buried his face in her blonde curls, desperate to inhale her very essence.

The darkness erupted in a whirl of sirens and flashing lights. An attendant bolted from the rescue truck and fell to his knees next to Shane. He placed

his hand gingerly on her limp wrist in search of a pulse. Finding none, the EMT sadly affirmed what he already knew with a nod. Shane hung his head.

Slowly, he gathered his wife to his chest.

Another onslaught of blaring sirens signalled the arrival of an ambulance. The attendant beside Shane jumped up and halted their approach. After confirming Kelly’s demise, two men pulled a stretcher from the back of the ambulance and jogged over to where she lay crumpled on the road. One of the attendants placed a hand cautiously on Shane’s shoulder. He looked up in despair, allowing the other EMT to take Kelly from him and place her on the waiting stretcher. He took a white sheet and covered her broken body. Before the man had finished with her death shroud, Shane pulled the sheet away from her face and lovingly tucked it up under her chin.

Puzzled, the young attendant looked at him.

“She doesn’t like anything over her face while she sleeps.”

It's that time of year again when writers lock themselves in their offices or wherever they write and begin typing feverishly until November 30th in hopes of making the goal of 50,000 words in one month.
This is my 6th year participating and I've crossed the finish line every time. Fingers crossed I can do so this year. Unexpectedly I got 1st round edits for Heart of Steele yesterday, so I won't begin NaNo until I've sent them in. Lucky for me, they are easy edits and should have them ready to send back at some point today.

Hi there! It's been awhile. I'm sorry for that. I just finished writing a Christmas story I think you'll really love. Once I finished it, I tried to go back and work on my WIP, a dark suspense about a serial killer. Trust me, the transition from Christmas to serial killers is not an easy task. Especially when the characters from your Christmas story are still hanging out in your mind. It seems my muse feels Jack & Jenna's story is not finished. I am putting together on an outline and hope to work on it for NaNoWriMo this year, that is if my muse co-operates.

I've got a fun Thursday 13 planned for this week.On November 4th is Blog Blast for Peace. I am totally looking forward to that.

We had a lovely turkey dinner at my best friends' house today. I love a good turkey stuffing, and she's a master when it comes to cooking. I think it's mandatory after a good feed of turkey to turn in early, which is where I am headed now. Why do I have a feeling my muse is going to make this difficult?

I have a special treat today. Best Selling UK Author, Terry Ravenscroft As you will see, he is a best-seller multiple times with several of his books.

He wrote many episodes of the situation comedy Terry and June and the radio series Star Terk Two. He now writes humorous books. The photograph is of the author when he was 25. Excerpt (Adult Content)

Ben’s cruel laughter echoed in the room as he zipped his fly and left. He whistled as he descended the stairs. Without a care in the world, he weaved through the empty streets toward the edge of town. He’d been this way many times over the past twenty years.

The road stopped short and he climbed the slight incline leading up to the graveyard. Despite the amount he had to drink, he moved with the agility of an alley cat. He threaded in and out the tombstones. Thick dew blanketed the marbles stones, the moonlight reflecting off the tiny drops. In the distance, the cry of a lone wolf resounded in the night air. Ben stopped to light a cigarette before continuing.

His gaze traveled over the place that had become so familiar to him. Why did he feel so at peace here? Ben shook his head and climbed a small hill. He saw his breath mingle with the fag’s smoke as he came to rest at the top. A flicker of recognition crossed his mind, and he trudged over to an unkempt plot. The corner of his mouth lifted into a smile, and he unzipped his pants.

“Good evening, Mother.” He steadied his stance and proceeded to pee over the headstone. Steam rose from the grayish rock, his piss uncovering the name chiseled into the surface.

“Don’t even think of giving me that look. She deserved everything she got,” said Ben. He stood, still exposed, and tapped a cigarette out into his hand. The light from his match cast an ominous glow about him. “Just like you did.” He tilted his head back, and his mad laughter echoed through the night air.

Ben zipped up his pants and sat on the ground in front of his mother’s grave. As he looked up to the sky, not a single star shone down on him. There’s no way in hell that bitch made it up there; Dear ol’ Mama is probably under me right now, where she should be. He lifted the cheek of his ass and let out a foul stench.

“There’s a kiss for ya.” He smirked and closed his eyes. How many more sluts would he have to put in their place? First Mama, then the mother of his only child… That ice queen, Sophie, almost felt his wrath again, but she’d been smart to get the fuck out after one warning. Did she really think I’d let her take my beloved Lizzy away?

Ben’s gaze fell on the white, blood red, and mustard-yellow flowers that littered the row of markers on either side of his mother’s grave. There had never been and would never be any on hers. He reached out and ran his fingers through the cluster of weeds edging her stone.

“Only the best for you, Mama.” He struggled to his feet and let out a heavy sigh before flicking his cigarette where her name lay. The angry red embers exploded on contact, echoing the anger he felt deep in his soul. “Don’t miss me too much.”

He turned and disappeared into the fog that had settled over the graveyard.

The setting sun cast a purplish glow over the coastline. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Lizzy lean back in her seat and sigh as she watched the hypnotic ocean ripple, each wave different from the first.
They made incredible progress today. At this rate, they could paint the walls tomorrow, which was much sooner than he had guessed possible. Adam eased the truck next to the curb just as Ben Stokes opened the door to the diner. He frowned, noticing the obvious change in Lizzy’s demeanor. A frightened expression settled over her sweet face.
“What’s wrong?”
“Can we get something to eat someplace else?” Her voice trembled, and Adam wondered if she was about to burst into tears.
“There’s a pot of clam chowder stewing at the house, if you don’t mind my mother talking your ear off.”
Lizzy laughed. “That sounds wonderful.” Her posture relaxed, and she touched his hand. “Thank you, Adam.”
Her touch sent an electric impulse up his arm. Without speaking, he made a U-turn toward his house. He understood why she didn’t want to be around Ben Stokes.
Adam pulled up in front of the house he shared with his mother. He took great pride in keeping the outside neat and tidy. The house wasn’t grand by any means, but the love inside made his home priceless. He watched Lizzy’s expressive eyes fill with moisture as they walked inside.
“Are you okay?”
“I’m fine.” She sniffed. “Your house makes me think of my mother.”
Edi wiped her hands on her apron as she bustled from the kitchen. Her face flushed, and she greeted them with smiling eyes.
“Lizzy! How nice to see you.” She folded her into her arms. “You poor dear, how are you holding up since that horrible accident?”
At the mention of the accident, tears spilled down Lizzy’s cheeks. She stared at her shoe in a futile attempt to hide her sadness and embarrassment.
“Oh dear.” Edi patted Lizzy’s back. “I am forever sticking my foot in my mouth. Don’t you mind me for one second!”
Adam gave his mother a look that told her to change the subject.
His mother apologized over and over. She stroked Lizzy’s back, attempting to comfort her.
Lizzy pulled away. “I’m sorry, I don’t know what came over me. I’m actually very excited about owning my own place.”
“Well, now, isn’t that something,” said Edi. “I’m sure you’ll do just fine. You are a lucky girl to have our Adam helping you out.”
Adam blushed at the praise and quickly reminded his mother they hadn’t eaten all day. Edi immediately hustled off to the kitchen, where the smell of freshly baked bread filled the small home.
Soon, the three of them sat down at the round wooden table. Edi scooped each of them up a big bowl of steaming clam chowder. In the center of the table sat a thickly sliced, mouth watering loaf of warm bread. Edi lathered a healthy dollop of fresh creamy butter on a slice and offered it to Lizzy.
“This is so delicious.” Lizzy tore off a piece of the bread and popped it in her mouth.
“Much better than anything we could have gotten at the diner.”
“Why thank you, dear,” said Edi. “You feel free to come by anytime you like. Our door will always be open to you.”
Adam watched the way the two women interacted and knew they’d be fast friends. Nothing could have pleased him more.
By the time he drove Lizzy home, she’d relaxed considerably. It wasn’t anything she said, but the way Lizzy stretched out on the seat reminded him of a lithe cat after eating its fill.

Thirteen Ways to Promote your Book/Product/Self

1- Website:- I’m sure this is self-explanatory. A website is a MUST HAVE in this day and age of e-books and online revolution. Make sure it’s, easy to navigate, and isn't an info dump. Even choosing the right colors and deciding to add music to your website can be a key factor in return visitors.

2- Blog:- If you’re going to have a blog, you MUST keep it current and up-to-date. Most visitors will look at the last date entered before proceeding. If it’s September 1^st and the last time you posted was June 17^th, you in all probability just lost a return visit.

3- Guest Blogging:- Any venue that gets your name out there is a good thing.. When guest blogging, make a great blogpost, and make sure it isn’t all about self-promotion. I mean, there is more to you than just the last book you wrote, right? Bloggers want to get to know you on a more personal level. Have fun with it!

4- Think Outside the Box:- This just might be one of the most important tools of self-promotion. I’ll use me for example. The majority of my readership are bikers, or love bikers. So, where do I promote? Definitely not a knitting circle lol (no offense to knitters out there ;)) I am active on a few biker sites, and I keep the promoting of my books to a bare minimum. If they find me intriguing as a person, they’ll ask or google me. I love to get googled!

5- Ads:- Be careful with ads, they can become very costly. My advice is to sit back and watch the various avenues you might take. Then weigh the good and the bad. The cost vs book sales. There are quite a few sites to place online ads for little to no money out of your pocket. Search and find. They’re out there.

6- Tag team:- It’s not only beneficial to you, but it makes promoting much more fun. Hook up with a fellow writer and plan a fun afternoon online chatting. Make sure you have a couple of giveaways, and interesting things to talk about that relate to your books.

7- Radio:- Blog Talk Radio is where I would start. Go through the list of radio shows that might apply to you and start asking for online interviews or to join in on a multi-authored chat. They are so much fun. In fact, I should be looking myself, it’s been awhile lol

8- Twitter:- Twitter is FAST paced. For me it is easy to become overwhelmed, especially when multi-tasking. Recently I’ve carved out an hour of my morning to tweet. I am having lots of fun and I’m not interfering with my writing.

9- Interviews:- Readers like to get to know their authors. A well-placed interview can create quite the buzz and generate traffic to you websites.

10- Branding:- Crucial. What do you think of when you hear Adelle Laudan? I’m pretty sure a good percentage of you think something motorcycle related. That is my brand and I love it is taking shape.

11- Interaction:- This too is crucial. Take the time to visit some of your readers’ blogs. EVERYBODY blogs nowadays, from new moms to cake decorators. There’s a little bit of everything out there, and your reader will remember you took the time to pop in and say hello.

12- Contests/Giveaways:- These can be big wins, or big losses. I’m not sure I’ve found the secret to successful contests and giveaways. Right now I’ve created a few different giveaways of my books through venues like Goodreads, The Romance Reviews, and Coffeetime. I’m generating lots of entries, but haven’t noticed a whole lot of immediate sales, Maybe when they’re looking for their next book to read, and see one of my covers, they’ll remember me. Even better, they’ll fall in love with the book they won and tell all of their friends and family.

13- Platform:- I’ll use me as an example. I feel it is important to ‘give back’ in some way. Whether that means volunteer work in your community, speaking engagements on a topic you are knowledgeable, or as I have done. Two of my Elle titles give $1 from every sale to a designated charity. (Breast Cancer Research * A.L.S. research) I’ve also put together a fun cookbook of which all proceeds go to the Sunshine Foundation of Canada. I enlisted the help of 16 authors who have contributed to this cookbook, and I have to say it is a one of a kind cookbook.

How do you like this cover? I finished it this morning. I will be offering my Iron Horse Rider Trilogy in one print edition. I am also adding a few fun features. I thought I'd update you on the WWR (Women Who Ride) Conga Fundraiser. If you remember, I donate $1 from each copy of She Rides sold (an Elle Laudan title)

This year the Conga Ride raised over $35,000 for Breast Cancer Research. You can read about their travels at www. gowitheflo.org

It's me, Kathy from the Big Island of Hawaii.

As I last told you Dallyanna and I had a lovely tea with special imported jams and jellies she brought for me from her travels. We sat and giggled for hours on end. She did have one sad story to tell me but I must save that till later. It is a pitiful tale about a Tailor, a Dragon and a fair little creature called One Fairy. I am not sure of how it ends so I guess we will all have to wait. Drats!

As promised though we did write a poem together. I had become quite angry with a man who said there is no such thing as mermaids. I suppose that means he thinks there are no fairies as well! Can you imagine? I was beet red over the whole incident.

Oh yes indeed, there is magic all around us. All we need do is open our hearts.

Pick up a leaf today. Go outside and breath the air. As you cradle that leaf notice the veins that make it different from all the other leaves from the tree it fell. You are that special as well. You knew I would say that didn't you? Because it is so true.

To quiet the lips of an angel
is utterly pathetic.
It is lonely without enchantment
no castles
no legends of mermaids
no fairy dust
how sad to not believe in what could be.
What a silly hoax!

Pick up all your numbers
fill up your tent
gather all your consequences
dreams never dreamt.
Figure out a timeline
travel in your loss
sip wine with dinner
look out on the horizon
measure

But still you will not know

right?

Taking the Plunge!

Tomorrow I will put on a bathing suit for the first time in 10 years. Yikes! Next week my best friend and I will be attending water aerobics 3 times a week.
This should all be very 'interesting'. Mostly because I wear hearing aids and I will have to take them out for the classes. Not sure how that's going to work out for me, being 90% deaf without them. lol I'll figure something out.
I've lost 10 pounds and am determined to keep watching those numbers go down. I think exercising in the water will be the kindest way to go on my back. Once I've built up some strength again I can explore other options.
I'm also purchasing a treadmill. Not a fancy one like in the gyms, but it will suffice. My doc agrees that aside from swimming, walking is the best thing I can do to strengthen my back again. Only problem is, I can't cross the street to the store without help. So, I figure if I can do some walking at home using a treadmill, at least I'll be already home if I've had enough. Not too keen on trying to go to the park on my own, get there, and can't walk back. That would NOT impress me. My girls would have a fit lol
I love that the fog has lifted and I am looking forward to tomorrow. For the past 3 years I've suffered with agoraphobia, a fear of going outside. What a horrid way to go through life. It wasn't easy to take that first step out the door, in fact I had to force myself. Once I did, it was like seeing the sun shine for the first time. My heart is racing just thinking about tomorrow, but I will make myself do it, and I doubt I will have any regrets I did.

I think everyone has a form of mind candy. For some it is found in music, puzzles, games, reading or mandalas. I find if my mind is cluttered I will print off a mandala from the oodles of sources on the net and color it.

A mandala is a sacred space, often a circle, which reveals some inner truth about you or the world around you. In Sanskrit mandala means both circle and center, implying that it represents both the visible world outside of us (the circle- whole world) and the invisible one deep inside our minds and bodies (the center- healing circle) `From Native American and Tibetan sandpaintings to Gothic rose windows and Hindu yantras, mandalas are used as symbols for meditation, protection and healing` Clare Goodwin 1996

5- Mandalas are not just something to look at or meditate on. There are now mandala coloring books. Coloring a mandala using pencil crayons, crayons, paint, or pastels combines the benefits of meditation and art therapy

6- The design of the mandala is to be visually appealing so as to absorb the mind in such a way that chattering thoughts cease, and a more philosophic or spiritual essence envelopes the observer which in turn leads to higher consciousness or awareness. In short, a mandala can be seen as a hypnotic, letting the creative hemisphere of our mind run a little more free while our analytical mind takes a little nap.

This is the winner of the National Organization of Women's Love Your Body Poster contest. I think it is the perfect opening to how I am feeling today after seeing a picture of myself from a recent book signing. I just finished framing the picture and have it sitting beside my monitor so I don't lose sight.
I am mortified with myself, being the biggest I've ever been my entire life. If you follow my journey you will have noticed my attempts to lose weight and be held accountable, all of which have failed miserably.
It truly is madness, even knowing the dire effect this extra weight has on my mobility. I think trying to lose weight is 10 times harder than it was to quit smoking after 35 years. I think quitting was the jumping off point to my weight gain, but that was over 3 years ago. That excuse simply doesn't fly today,
What can I do differently than I've done before and failed? I have no idea, but I do know one thing for sure. The party is OVER.

Marks Run for ALS Research

I've been super busy of late, and I am getting ready to attend Mark's Run this Saturday August 6th in Milton Ontario. This is a video made about last years run, sadly Mark passed away earlier this year from ALS (Lou Gehrigs' Disease) If you can't make it to the ride, perhaps you can donate to this worthy cause

Wow! I just took a look at the date of my last post. I'm so very sorry. Life sure gets in the way at times. It's all good though. After my book signing in Kitchener, I took a couple of days to recoup, this old body doesn't bounce back as fast as it once did.

I was handed first round of edits for Elle's next release, Show Me Yours with Decadent Publishing. Edits went extremely well and I turned them back in, a couple of days ago. Yesterday I was ready to sign off for the night and the 2nd round came to my inbox. Of course I filed it away for morning and went to bed like a good girl....NOT lol I stayed up until 2 am, and left one specific area to work on today. I'm very excited about this release. This is an ADULT read, so you'll have to sign up over at Elle's blog to take a sneak peek very soon.

What now? Now that the creative juices are flowing I'm writing a very short story for a contest. I'll give more details after I've entered. I will say it is of the paranormal romance genre, a new venture for me.

I also have another book signing next weekend, August 6th in Milton Ontario. I will be signing my two Elle titles at Mark's Run It is a Charity Poker Run for A. L. S. (Lou Gehrig's Disease) $1 from each sale of Mystified will be donated to this very worthy cause.

The proof copy of my charity cookbook, Sweet Sunshine came in on Friday. It is gorgeous! I cannot wait to share it with you all. It should be available on Amazon in the next couple of days. Also, the featured authors will be linking to it from their sites. You can purchase it directly from me. I will have a place to do so on my Website as soon as the book goes live. All proceeds of this cookbook go to the Sunshine Foundation of Canada.

A Big Day!

I attended a Motorcycle Meet & Greet today in Kitchener, Ontario, signing my two new Elle Laudan titles.

I have to say I was very nervous about the whole thing, as it was the first time I'd been out among my friends in these circles since a rather difficult break up. I guess you could say, I'd been in a self-imposed hiding place, healing my heart.

Today turned out to be a day filled with many books signed, and reconnecting with some very dear friends, who happened to have missed me terribly and still love me just as much, if not more than they once did. A big sigh of relief there.
I even met some online friends without faces...Jo-Anne, Sandy, John and his wife Sam... I'm sure I missed someone...

Of course, seeing the ex was extremely hard, but he has a new love in his life and seems happy. I want that for him. I've always wanted that for him. Although I didn't speak to him. I did see him for the first time since we split....and guess what? I didn't die.

Maybe I can finally close that chapter in this ol' book we call life.

It's funny how we can build things up, and second guess ourselves to such an extreme it is immobilizing. There we are, stuck in our own self-doubt and insecurities. For three years I did this, and I'm happy to take a step out in the public eye. I'm actually looking forward to my next venture on August 6th, Mark's Run, Charity Poker Run for A.L. S. (Lou Gehrig's disease) I will be signing books there as well, and donating $1 to this fundraiser for every copy of Mystified sold.

So, if I didn't see you today, I'd love to see you then. I hope the weather is as nice as it was today, except for the fact I have one red side, and one white side. lol Maybe I can position myself and get the other side done lol I know a few people were taking pictures, so if I like any of them, I'll be sure to share them. I can't tell you how many people mentioned how they'd tried to find a pic of me online with no luck. I'll have to remedy that...soon. I promise.
Well, my meds are kicking in, so it's time to crash. I have a doc appt in the morning... I hope I hear the alarm

Booksigning this Sunday!

This Sunday! July 24th, I will be in Kitchener, Ontario signing my first two 'Elle Laudan' titles, She Rides & Mystified.
It's going to be a fun filled day combining the motorcycle meet & greet with Christmas in July in downtown Kitchener. There will be all sorts of things going on, even a live band and face painting for the kids.
I am really looking forward to making a public appearance, this is the first one in three years. I can assure you, this is only the first of many.
