I think you'd have to live under a rock not to have heard the buzz about 50 Shades of Grey trilogy.
It is definitely not my genre of choice, but I had to read them.
$12 for an ebook? Holy crap!
How can a new author become such a global phenomenon with a trilogy that not so long ago would have made the banned books list?
Libraries are being forced to put the trilogy on their shelves due to the overwhelming public demand. Hotels are taking the bible out of rooms and replacing them with 50 Shades of Grey?
It's mind boggling.
So back to the why? Having read the books I am even more stumped than before. I think the only way an author can thoroughly enjoy these books is if they are able to turn off their internal editor. Yes, it's that bad. I don't want to give away too much for those who might be thinking about reading them. When you do read them keep these words in mind... my Goddess - my inner Goddess - oh my Goddess... you'll understand what I mean.
The thing I am most bafffled by is how many women are all googoogahgah over the infamous Mr Grey. I've read a few bdsm books and know some wickedly talented authors who write in this genre. Mr Grey may be a dominant, but he's also a perverted egomaniac and bully. What is sexy about that?
Shaking myhead here. Have you read them? Am I alone in feeling stumped about the success of this trilogy?
How in the h*ll will they turn it into a movie?
What's your take?
Thank you, Peter. Check out this video.

Great post! I know how you feel though, I'm just as confused as you are.
I've read some reviews of the book and while I enjoy erotica (and write in this particular genre under a pen name) I'm not into BDSM and even less into the fact that the main character is a bully. So yeah, I'm probably not going to read the books, and even less after I heard that it's poorly written. How did that happen?! So many talented writers that should be published...sigh...I'm just going to stop myself because otherwise I'm going to go on and on. Anyway long story short...50 Shades of Grey? No, thank you.
I think you'll probably both enjoy this documentary:

It seems to correlate well with many of the comments you're making.
Thanks Peter. I've embedded the video for my readers. Nice to see you here.
Im on the 3rd book now. This isnt my usual genre either but everyone in the office was talking about them so I had to give them a go. I find myself rolling my eyes alot. There is a story there but everything is so far fetched, its kind of comical. Good on her for making so much money on her first try though.
For sure it is good for her. I can't help but me a little jealous lol Sigh, maybe one day...
